Colorado Trip Part One: Monument Rocks

In October, we took the kids on the absolute best trip we've ever taken. We took 8 days and drove out to Colorado, splitting our time between Colorado Springs and Estes Park. We saw some awesome things, did some awesome things, ate some awesome things, and basically just had an awesome time together. I have about a million photos from this trip, and several people have asked to see more than I shared on social media, so here it goes.

These photos are from day one, the drive there. We actually left the night before this, right after I finished a marathon day of Short & Sweet sessions, and stayed in St. Louis, then finished up the drive the next day, finally arriving in Colorado Springs well after midnight.

The only interesting thing we saw on our drive through Kansas was Monument Rocks. Oh, and a random little petting zoo beside a gas station.  But Monument Rocks was cool enough that it totally made up for the rest of the long and boring drive. Nothing against Kansas, I'm sure there are some cool things there. Just not along I-70!

Monument Rocks was a half hour drive off I-70, half of which was on a dirt road. It was slow and dirty, but definitely memorable. And worth it. We almost skipped it because I kind of just wanted to get to the hotel at a decent time, but I'm so glad Daniel insisted on stopping. These giant rocks are just out in the middle of a field, with nothing else around for miles. Super cool, and especially pretty in the evening. We ended up staying later than we intended and got to see the sunset too, which was pretty awesome.

I've seen tons of photos of these rocks on Instagram, so I kind of knew what to expect, but they were a bit bigger than I expected. We all had so much fun exploring!

I have a thing for silhouettes. I could probably fill a wall with all the silhouette photos I've taken of my kids over the years.

I have a thing for shadows too.

These two kind of melt my heart.

Jack took tons of photos on this trip. It was really fun to look through them and see the trip through his eyes.

Another cool thing about Kansas - with literally nothing to block the view, the sunsets last practically forever! There was almost half an hour between these two photos.

Coming up in part two: Skyline Drive in CaƱon City, Colorado!
